Ulun Danu Beratan Temple
Nestled on the shores of Lake Beratan in Beratan Bali’s misty highlands stands the Ulun Danu Beratan Temple, a stunning piece of history and spirituality. This water temple is not just a place of worship—it is the heart of a legend passed down through generations.
Long ago, long before this temple existed, the area around Lake Beratan was a prosperous area ruled by a wise and kind king named King Bhatara Upangkara. This king was loved by his people for his justice and the King always made sure that the water sources on this island flowed smoothly, fertilizing the rice fields and villages below.
But one year, a terrible drought hit the land. The sky refused to send rain, the lake water receded, and the crops withered. The people became desperate and sought guidance from the king. Believing that the gods were testing their devotion, King Upangkara climbed to the misty peaks around the lake and meditated for days, calling on Dewi Danu, the revered goddess of water and fertility.

The goddess Danu appeared to the king in radiant form, her presence calming the winds and warming the air. She told the king that the balance of nature had been disturbed by greed and disrespect for nature. To restore harmony, the people must build a temple on the shore of the lake as a sanctuary for the gods and a reminder to respect the elements.
The king returned and conveyed the message of the goddess Danu to his people. Though they were weakened by the drought, their faith gave them strength. Together, they built a magnificent temple on the lake, her shrine seemingly floating on the water’s surface. They dedicated it to the goddess Danu, offering prayers, flowers, and rice to seek her blessing.
As the final stone of the temple was laid, the sky darkened and rain began to fall. The lake filled again, its waters glistening in the sunlight. The fields flourished and the people rejoiced, knowing that their prayers had been answered.
Today, Pura Ulun Danu Beratan remains a symbol of harmony and gratitude. Visitors can still feel the spiritual energy of the place, as they walk among the pagodas. And the shadows of the temple seem to dance on the surface of the lake. The Balinese continue to honor Dewi Danu with ceremonies and offerings, ensuring that the sacred balance between humans and nature is maintained for future generations.
