Lempuyang Temple, also known as Pura Lempuyang Luhur, is deeply rooted in Balinese Hindu tradition and mythology. Located on the sacred slopes of Mount Lempuyang in East Bali, this ancient temple is considered one of the most important spiritual sites in Bali. The Gateway to Heaven
Long ago, Bali was believed to be the dwelling place of powerful gods and goddesses. Mount Lempuyang, one of Bali’s oldest and most sacred mountains. And is considered as the gateway between the mortal world and heaven. To honor this sacred site, Pura Lempuyang Luhur, was made one of the “Sad Kahyangan,” the six holiest temples in Bali, which protect the island from spiritual imbalance.
This temple is dedicated to Ida Sang Hyang Widhi Wasa, who is the highest god in the Hindu teachings for the Balinese people. Who in His manifestation as Hyang Iswara, the guardian of the east. Because of its location in the highlands, it symbolizes the human journey towards enlightenment and spiritual clarity.
The Legend of the Sacred Steps
According to Balinese mythology, the temple is guarded by spirits and gods who test the faith and purity of those who come to pray. Pilgrims must climb more than 1,700 steps to reach the main temple at the top. A journey that is both a physical and spiritual challenge.
The steps are said to have an enchantment. Those with sincere hearts and pure intentions will find the climb light and easy. While those burdened with bad intentions may find the climb insurmountable. And along the way up the stairs, pilgrims will encounter small temples, each offering a place to reflect and purify their minds before reaching the summit.
The Tale of the Dragon Guardians
The legend of this temple tells the story of Naga Basuki and Naga Anantaboga. Which are two mystical dragons that guard the temple and the surrounding land. These snake-like creatures are said to be the embodiment of the earth’s energy and protect the sacred mountain. And the local villagers believe that their presence is a guarantee of harmony and prosperity in the area.
During the temple ceremonies, all offerings are made to honor the dragons. Which is an expression of gratitude for their protection of the people and asking for blessings for fertility and abundance.
