Monkeys Forest Sangeh
Monkeys Forest Sangeh, which is located about 21 kilometres north of the city of Denpasar, is precisely famous for its forest that is inhabited by hundreds of monkeys that are quite tame.
In this forest there are several temples such as Pura Melanting, Pura Tirta, and Pura Bukit Sari which is the newest and largest temple. Based on historical records, Pura Bukit Sari has a close relationship with the Mengwi Kingdom, and was built by Anak Agung Anglurah Made Karang Asem Sakti, who was the adopted son of King Mengwi Cokorda Sakti Blambangan.
Anak Agung Anglurah Made Karang Asem Sakti performed Rare tapa, which is meditating like a baby/child. And got the inspiration to build a Pelinggih or Temple in the Pala Sangeh forest, which is now known as Pura Bukit Sari which is located in the middle of the Pala Forest.
The name Sangeh is believed by the local community to be closely related to the Nutmeg Forest, which comes from two words, namely “Sang” which means people and “Ngeh” which means to see, or people have seen. It is said that there was a nutmeg tree that was seen on the way from Mount Agung in East Bali to the journey to West Bali. because someone saw it, the tree stopped at a place now known as Sangeh. In addition to being famous for its 600 tame long-tailed gray monkeys (Macaca fascicularis), Sangeh is also known for its 10-hectare homogeneous forest area containing hundreds of years old nutmeg forests (Dipterocarpus trinervis). And there is also the Bukit Sari Temple, a relic of the Mengwi Kingdom in the 17th century. As well as the Wadon Lanang Tree.
